Livery

Swanston Farm offers DIY Grass Livery for horse owners seeking year-round turnout in a unique rural setting. Located within 700 acres of farmland, with direct access to over 25,000 acres of the Pentland Hills Regional Park, Swanston provides exceptional hacking and a natural environment for horses to live outdoors throughout the year.

Our liveries benefit from regular visits by farriers, veterinarians and qualified instructors, while pasture management is supported through a Faecal Worm Egg Count (FWEC) programme overseen by Central Equine Vets.

Biosecurity & Horse Welfare

Maintaining the health and wellbeing of our horses is a top priority. All new arrivals must complete a comprehensive pre-arrival screening process, including Strangles testing, followed by a mandatory 14-day quarantine period and subsequent veterinary checks. These measures help protect the yard from Strangles, Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) and Equine Influenza.

All horses at Swanston Farm must:

  • Be fully vaccinated against Equine Influenza and Tetanus
  • Be microchipped
  • Hold a valid equine passport
  • Have 3rd Party Public Liability Insurance

Please note that we do not accept stallions, Shetland ponies or miniature breeds.

Facilities

Swanston Livery benefits from:

  • Indoor riding arena
  • 60m x 30m all-weather outdoor arena
  • A limited number of stables
  • Large grazing fields with galvanised steel water troughs
  • Small-herd grazing management to promote pasture health and horse welfare

In winter, ad-lib hay and haylage are provided in the fields, while grazing areas are maintained throughout the spring and summer months to ensure optimal conditions.

Visitor Access

Swanston Farm is not a riding school and does not offer trekking or riding lessons.  If you are looking for local pony trekking, please contact the Edinburgh Exmoor Pony Trekking Society.

Non-liveries wishing to ride onto the Pentland Hills from Swanston Farm must obtain prior permission from the office and will be directed to a designated parking area. In line with our biosecurity policy, visitors are not permitted to use the equestrian facilities or ride through the livery yard.
